Maxx Technologies Upgrades Second Baptist of Houston
IN.LINE Chosen to Cover Difficult Space

"We are trying to develop exceptional worship experiences for our congregation. The IN.LINE series line arrays are playing a significant role in helping us realize this important goal. "
Mark Sepulveda
Second Baptist Church
When the Second Baptist Church of Houston upgraded the PA system in their multipurpose room on their Woodway Campus, they also went for an entire room tune up. The upgrade was intended to extend the range of performances that could take place in the 120’ x 60’ multipurpose room. It had been used primarily for school sporting events and, according to Mark Sepulveda, the church’s technical director, the room needed to be able to handle any kind of event up to and including top touring Christian rock concerts.

The church has three campuses that are constantly busy serving the 50,000 strong congregation’s needs. Saturday and Sunday worship services at the main Woodway sanctuary attracts between 4,000 to 6,000 worshippers to both traditional liturgical/communion and contemporary services. The needs of the contemporary services, like churches of all persuasions worldwide, are changing to attract and retain youth and young adults. The recruitment offers not only sporting and recreational facilities but also state of the ear multi media systems for all sorts of theatric and musical presentations.

Today, traditional sanctuaries are racing for upgrades that can handle a myriad of multi media presentations; from missionary reports to live radio and TV broadcast services to Christmas pageants to delicate and precise chorales to groups who literally rock the house. Services are being enhanced by orchestras that include full brass, guitar based bands and individually mic’ed singers who perform both traditional numbers and increasingly popular Praise Team services.

With these needs in mind, the Woodway

multipurpose room was analyzed by Maxx Technologies out of Nashville, Tennessee, who determined that if the system was to be upgraded to include McCauley IN.LINE 90s and 120s left and right line arrays, with high frequencies being handled by a Crown I-Tech 4000, and lows powered by a Crown I-Tech 8000.

Acoustical treatments were installed to insure the speaker’s acoustic integrity and let the system shine without diffusing the 125Hz and 250Hz frequencies. Maxx elected to install of 4’x 8’x 2 1/4” Custom Pro Panels from Auralex Acoustic.

The analog FOH console remained unchanged to accommodate both analog and digital sound processing.
So how does Sepulveda like the upgrade?

“I’ve gotten more email about that room and how great the new system sounds,” he said. “Everything worked extremely well. This is the third largest room on the campus so things need to work well. When we had the rear wall designed, we utilized a London architecture system that allows a 60 foot rear wall to roll open so we can utilize the fellowship hall. We can accommodate between 1,000 to 900 people in our expanded multipurpose room now.”

“There are somewhere between 30 to 40 events a week in this one room,” he continued. “We support programs like our Teamkid ministry, Mothers of Pre-schoolers, SingleCity2 or our family support programs like our Budgeting seminars. Our staff of twenty is always busy making sure that the AV works properly.” Mark continues; “We’re trying to develop exceptional worship experiences for our congregation. The IN.LINE series line arrays are playing a significant role in helping us realize this important goal.””

“I’ve seen the evolution of line array technology,” Sepulveda continued. “I’ve been here ten years and we’ve seen it all. The McCauley modules were extremely affordable, sound great and I have the greatest confidence that they will handle anything that we can throw at it.” Literally; after the installation, Sepulveda threw a volley ball hard into one of the arrays to see if anything would happen. “Nothing is going to hurt this system,” he said. “I’m happy.”
